A major scandal rocked our nation when it was announced that Deborah Jeane Palfrey operated an escort / prostitution service in Washington D.C. She provided a service that people were seeking, employed women who were seeking employment, paid them well, and did her best to ensure safe working conditions. Hmmm...

May 2, 2007, 4:57 p.m.I'll second that. This is a personal issue, and to "regulate" morality is immoral in and of itself.
People should be free to do whatever they want with their body or their property, so long as by doing so they don't violate another person's right to do the same.
Government restriction of that code of liberty needs to be stopped at every turn.
A good read on this;

May 2, 2007, 9:44 p.m.Absolutely. Legalize it. But women should be protected from pimps and sexual slavery.

May 3, 2007, 5:03 p.m.Yes, Yes, Yes. Every US citizen should get a voucher to visit a ****** house. When Republicans are in power and taxes are low and life is great, one trip a year would be great after April 15th.
However, when the Democrats are in power, we all would deserve a free visit every week if for no other reason than to keep our minds off how badly the Democrats are ruining America. We could then be like other people of poor nations who must rely on their genitals for all of their recreation, because there will be no money left in our pockets.

May 2, 2007, 4:27 p.m.Hey 2sidestoeverything - your login is certainly very appropriate to this situation. :-)
We hope to get a real, open, and honest discussion going on this topic... it'll be interesting to see where this goes in the coming hours.
Have an awesome day!

May 3, 2007, 11:21 a.m.Ok, I can stir the pot for you. How can a civilized society allow a woman to unilaterally end a life with abortion, but not have the freedom to benefit financially from having sex (which on it's own is not illegal) with another consenting adult. It would seem to me that the ruling is already there it's her body to do with as she pleases. ps this is not about abortion, I am not trying to use this a an abortion issue.

May 2, 2007, 6:24 p.m.I say yes but as long as it's voluntary. And there's the kicker. As with our "all volunteer" military, it's sometimes hard to know whether some are making this career choice out of desperation or lack of other opportunities vs a choice based on a genuine desire to enter the profession.

May 2, 2007, 6:57 p.m.actually, the idea of a "volunteer" military is a fraud. Yes, they volunteer for the job, but the fact is they're paid soldiers. period.
a purely volunteer military would be more like a citizen-milita, in my opinion.
but that's probably best left for another thread.

May 2, 2007, 6:36 p.m.Hey mesodude, great point.
You can be sure that with the black market situation today and thus absolutely no regulation and no oversight - there's a lot of "unvoluntary prostitution" going on.
Have an awesome day!

May 3, 2007, 12:55 a.m.During the Vietnam war it was what we called the "poverty draft" -- the only choice for the unskilled. Does anyone think that notion is unrelated to Bush's immigration "policy"? The more low- and unskilled workers he lets in, the more people are forced into the only other choice.

May 2, 2007, 6:40 p.m.Prostitution is already a legal occupation in other countries and in parts of Nevada. I have no problem with it. Frankly, it is more about contract law than anything else. As long as the consenting people are using protection for their own benefit and that of their clients, then the long term effects are a satisfied populace. It is the morally superior of our nation who seek to keep it a criminal enterprise.
However what is good for the goose, is truly good for the gander. Women are not the sole gender who offer services to the public. Men too have served as gigolos for some time. Whether their clients are male or female is irrelevant. Prostitution is an occupation that should no longer be criminal. Legalize it and make it a clean operation.

May 2, 2007, 8:19 p.m.yes definately make a clean opperation, I think that's most important. I have no problem with it, tho don't think they should be standing on the street corners advertising, and if it was legal, they wouldn't have to do that. Of course no forced or under age.

May 2, 2007, 6:40 p.m.mesodude:
You are right, the problem is not the prostitution, but the question of how "voluntary" that job choice is. Most girls/women in that industry say it was the only option open to them at the time. For the girls, especially, being forced out of their homes (by situations that are worse by comparison to living on the streets) means they had to make money immediately, waiting a week or two for a paycheck was not an option. And most were too young to get a job in the first place.

May 3, 2007, 1:08 a.m.I agree that many women were forced into prostitution by economy, life situation, etc.
But then these helpless women are precisely the ones who need the greatest protection from domineering pimps, drug addiction, and STD's.
Without legalization, legal protection, medical supervision, income protection, social security, etc. would be completely out of reach for these victims on the fringes of society.

May 2, 2007, 7:02 p.m.Prostitution should be legal, but only based upon the will of the individual. Every individual should have the right, nay the duty, to perform as they wish. Society has NO right to say otherwise.

May 3, 2007, 2:14 p.m.I disagree because I think that the individual who choses to prostitute is directly contributing to the creation of a society that is not fit for the young, impressionable people around them to live in and prosper. Therefore, it is not simply about that individual - their actions have consequences that affect others.

May 2, 2007, 7:04 p.m.Also, 97% of your respondents say that it should be legal. That should make us think. It won't, but it should.
